SEPTEMBER IS SPORTS EYE SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH

An estimated 42,000 sports-related eye injuries occur annually in the U.S. In children aged 16 and under sports are the leading cause of eye injuries.

Sports with the highest incidence of ocular injury include basketball, baseball, racquet sports, soccer, field hockey, cycling, and water sports. Common eye injuries include fractured eye sockets, scratched corneas, swollen retinas, retinal tears, retinal detachments, and trauma-induced cataracts, which can lead to irreversible eye damage.

Fortunately, most of these injuries can be prevented by wearing appropriate eye protection.

Safeguard your eyes and vision by following these rules

  • Comprehensive eye exams are essential before buying gear to detect hidden vision problems, ensure up-to-date prescriptions, and support coordination.

  • Recommended Eyeglasses: Glasses with plastic lenses should be avoided since they are vulnerable to impact and breakage.

  • Use Proper Protective Gear: Individuals needing vision correction should wear prescription protective sports eyewear with polycarbonate lenses and UV protection.

  • Check for Padding: Sports eyewear should feature padding or cushioning along the brow and bridge of the nose to avoid skin cuts.

  • Protect Vulnerable Vision: Athletes with diminished vision in one eye should carefully weigh the risks associated with injuring the stronger eye before participating in high-risk sports.

Action Plan for Injuries

  • Seek Immediate Care: In the event of trauma to the eye, see a doctor immediately to help prevent potential vision loss.
